A woman called police around 9:40 a.m. Sunday, June 11, saying a shirtless man — later identified as Dawayntay Giles — was threatening to "take her out" in the parking lot of the Plantation Drive Dollar General in Stafford, Stafford County Sheriff David Decatur said.

When Stafford County Sheriff's Deputy Sypolt arrived on scene, he saw Giles standing near a vehicle. Before Sypolt had a chance to get out of his vehicle, Giles swiftly got into his own and turned it on, Decatur said.

Giles quickly reversed his vehicle into Sypolt’s cruiser, striking it, before fleeing the parking lot. Sypolt initiated a pursuit as Sergeant N. Zotos joined. Giles vehicle fled north on Warrenton Road and, when he reached McWhirt Loop, came to a stop only for a moment.

Giles then made a sharp U-turn, drove over the concrete median, and continued at a high rate of speed.

Realizing the threat to the community as the vehicle approached Southbound 95, Zotos tried to make intentional vehicle contact with Giles' car. While contact was made, it was unsuccessful, as the suspect rolled down his window and cursed at Zotos.

Not one to give up, Zotos tried again. This time, it worked: Giles' car was able to be stopped on the shoulder of the on ramp. Deputies tired to have Giles get out of his car, however, he had other plans and continued to curse at deputies and make a phone call.

After a brief standoff, the suspect exited his vehicle and was taken into custody without further incident. When asked why he ran, Giles said he “just wanted to get away," and that he did nothing wrong. Giles, as it turns out, had two active warrants out of Prince William County for assault and battery.

He was charged with felony eluding, hit and run, reckless driving, and making an illegal U-turn. He was also served on his active warrants. He was held at Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond.
